Unknown Caller is a 2016 American short horror film written and directed by Raphael Camua. It stars Kaela Elmido, Jenna Mattinson, and Andrew Wall.

Loosely based on the urban legend The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs as well as taking inspiration from the films Halloween and Scream, Unknown Caller is the second short film by Camua and was uploaded onto the video streaming website YouTube on 29 January 2016.

Plot[edit]

The film starts off with Olivia Manson (Elmido) talking on FaceTime with her friend, Scarlet (Mattinson). As she talks on the phone, she exits her house and proceeds to lock up for the night; she walks over to the side gate, and locks it from outside. She reenters her house subsequently.

Olivia switches the call over to her computer, where she and Scarlet chat and joke about Olivia staying home alone. Suddenly, her phone starts to ring. Not expecting anyone in particular, Olivia is curious as to who is calling her. She answers the unknown number, and the only thing heard on the other line was heavy breathing, followed by the caller hanging up.

Weirded by the peculiarity of the call, Olivia explains to Scarlet what happened, and Scarlet suspects that their friend Drew is pranking Olivia. Going along with it, Olivia answers the next call with the thought of Drew being on the other end of the line. With Drew admitting that she caught him, he tells her that he has her Christmas gift with him outside. Naive as she is, Olivia walks out to her front yard, looking for him. Unknowingly to Olivia, a hooded figure holding a baseball bat sneaks up behind her and enters her house. She receives another unknown call, and her suspicion is raised when the man on the other end said he wasn't Drew, but rather the last person she'll ever see alive. Paranoid and afraid, Olivia runs back into her house.

Curious, Scarlet questions Olivia's sudden change of attitude. Olivia confesses that it wasn't Drew calling her, and that it was a creep harassing her. Scarlet tells Olivia that she will come over to make sure nothing happens to her. Just as she does this, the phone rings again; Olivia answers, and as she attempts to drive the man away, the man tells her that he is in her house. Frozen with fear, she sees him standing in the dark hallway outside her room. The man - now in control of Olivia - shuts the power off and plays a game of Hide and Seek with her. He tells her to not try anything stupid, for it will result in fatal consequences. Olivia is almost successful in escaping, but is stopped at the back door when Scarlet abruptly appears. Knocking and hoping Olivia would let her in, a hooded masked figure appears behind Scarlet, and bangs her head against the glass, knocking her out.

Olivia hides, and the man - still on the phone with her - tells her to finish the game or else she'll die. She reluctantly cooperates. Peeking out of the counter she hid in, Olivia spots a knife on the other end of it. Trying to be discreet as possible, she reaches for it, but her hand slips, causing it to fall and make a loud thud. She panics, looks, and is caught by the masked figure.

She slides underneath him as he lunges towards her, and she escapes to the backyard. She reaches the side gate, and is unable to open it (since she locked it in the beginning of the film). However, Olivia hops the brick wall and almost escapes the man, before he stops her in her front lawn. She runs back inside her house and locks the door.

Irritated by the harm the man caused her and Scarlet, Olivia tells him she will kill him. He responds with, "Try me." and enters through the back door. He attacks her, but she dodges him and bangs his head against a half-wall, knocking him unconscious. She takes a deep exhale, and runs out to help Scarlet.

With no service and Scarlet barely conscious, Olivia tells her she is going to get help. Scarlet tries to tell her something, but she quickly dismisses it and runs off. Scarlet then tries to call out to Olivia, saying that there's another one. In the distance, a second masked figure walks into the house. Olivia walks out to the front door. As she exits, the man is seen behind her. He extends his hand to grab her, and the film cuts to black.
